A number of our physiotherapists at PVPR are certified by Acupuncture Canada, and utilize the techniques in their treatment of nerve, joint and muscular problems, headaches, and sports related injuries. Acupuncture can also help alleviate symptoms of arthritis, sciatica, back pain, bursitis and neuropathy, among many other conditions.
Acupuncture has proven benefits for recovering from illness and injury and commonly combined with other forms of physiotherapy is used in the treatment of pain and the ‘restoration of general well-being’.
During an acupuncture treatment one-time use sterile needles are placed in certain ‘acupuncture points’. The majority of these points are in muscles. The needles remain in the acupuncture point between 15 and 20 minutes. Most people find their acupuncture treatments relaxing. Others may experience minimal discomfort.
Our acupuncture treatments are normally a part of a comprehensive physiotherapy treatment plan. Some manual therapy and specific therapeutic exercise are likely to be used in conjunction with the acupuncture to ensure a thorough rehabilitation program.
